  • "At age 64, I cannot think of an all around finer doctor of any kind who has treated me for any ailment, big or small. And if you’re reading this, you know big doesn’t even begin to describe cancer. From initial diffuse B cell lymphoma diagnosis in 1/23 through my last round of very intense chemotherapy (which ultimately resulted in a clean scan!) 5/23 and now my continuing care, he’s akin to a lighthouse which in its quiet unassuming manner continually shining its bright light as reassurance to the captain/crew that they are a safe distance from the shore. Dr S. is the unassuming continually shining bright light when it comes to managing my treatment. Not enough space for all the adjectives I could use, but here’s some that I truly value/appreciate. 1. Expert knowledge without you having to jargon you a lot to prove to you he’s good and knows what he’s talking about. Quiet confidence is very reassuring. 2. Direct and upfront, and takes as much stress off as one could when managing expectations , whether for a component of the treatment or its entirety. Empathetic, genuinely caring and thoughtful . 3. A role model for bedside manner. You don’t see ‘soft skills’ on pretty much any resume, yet it is one of the most invaluable skills anywhere and for cancer treatment, second only to the medicine/treatment itself. From experience, I know you can’t teach this skill. Has a lot to do with personality, listening and communication (both verbal and non-verbal). Has all those and more, refined and developed over time. 4. Last one I’m going to talk about, but nowhere, the least is positivity. I’m a positive individual by nature, and the best way I can describe it, is Dr S acts as a multiplier. I do have to say one more very important and integral aspect to my great care. Any doctor cannot execute without having an equally able support staff behind him in all facets. Everyone I worked with at Astera, demonstrated the same high-level of care, compassion, ability and knowledge. For those who know the long running sitcom of Cheers, it’s comforting (ironic for cancer, yet accurate for Astera 😀) to walk into a place where everybody knows your name! That’s a small sampling about my past and present, cancer treatment Honestly though, what can anyone say that would be enough to express the gratitude for not only saving their life, but in the process make them an even better person, than, THANK YOU, I WILL BE ETERNALLY GRATEFUL FOR SAVING MY LIFE (and for giving me the opportunity to own a dream car 😀)."
