Extreme Precision In Treating Cancer
At Astera, we use Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT) to deliver high doses of radiation to tumors with extreme precision over just 1–5 daily sessions.
Most commonly, our radiation oncologists use SBRT to treat early stage lung cancer as well as tumors of the spine, liver, adrenal glands, and other organs.
We custom-design the positioning and treatment delivery to your individual needs, using specialized molds and casts to prevent movement of the cancer target.
We take CT scans or X-rays to precisely determine the target’s location, shape and size. We use these scans to plan the different treatment delivery pathways called “fractions”.
With SBRT, we deliver multiple beams of radiation to the tumor through these pathways. While the full dose of radiation reaches the tumor, each pathway to the target receives only a small fraction of the total dose.
SBRT has been proven highly successful in treating early stage lung tumors. It’s a good treatment option for patients who:
- Want to avoid surgery
- Are not eligible for surgery
Our radiation oncologists are highly trained, experienced and nationally known specialists leading the way in treating cancer with radiation, with dedication and compassion for every patient under our care.
